S52/M52 Swap Questions

Post by quarry »

Hey is there a good detailed thread on here regards putting the S52/M52 in to a RHD E21 on here, I did look and see a few build that had pictures but could not see much regards what trans, oil pan or wiring mods that need to be done, Just looking for a good detailed link.
Thanks

I’ve been researching the same conversion and have found a bunch of good threads in the readers rides section under “modified”.
Gearbox I’m using is the getrag g260 but the g250 and g240 will work(from what I’ve read and the zf from the 328 or m3 also works but is meant to need some trans tunnel modifications.
I’m looking to modify my e34 sump (as others have) so it won’t sit so low but I believe so,e have left it as is and for the wiring google has a fair few pics of the e21 pin out and the m52 engine harness pin out that can be used to matchup what’s required.

Thank you for the info, I presumed it had been done a few times and was just wondering what people found as the best set up of parts to do the swap.

As you are up north not that far from nas80, I'd get in contact with him.
try him on PM.

He's done quite a few nice M52 conversions.

I've done a load of these swaps now, however I've since retired from doing them anymore.

There's many ways to skin the cat so to speak. Wiring is very easy too really.

You can run a stock e34 sump but if you don't want to suicide it on the first bump you hit I'd recommend cutting it and adding wings on and baffles to keep the capacity.

You can use a M20 box if you want to keep your brake system. Or you can get clever and run the m52 box if you remove the stock brake system.

Just don't do a crap job or assume it's going to be a bolt in job. Its actually probably the same amount of work as fitting any engine.

Personally I wouldnt bother with a BMW engine. Id go honda k20 or Saab b204 perhaps but better yet rotary power.

Thanks for the info, I was going to go with US Spec S52 M3 Engine with its ZF 5 Speed trans, But not sure the best way to go regards the speedo set up/ pickup, also just wondered why you say " remove the stock brakes" if I go with ZF box?
Thanks

These conversions seam to be well documented, apart from the wiring! Apparently it’s not difficult! Anyone got a definitive guide please. Help much appreciated.
