Lemme see your headunits!

Post by Sel The Don »

Hello all,

As per the title, I'd like to see what headunits you are running in your E21s. I'm trying to figure out if I should go for an older Alpine head unit with aux and/or USB or go for a newer unit with screen, Android Auto etc.

Thanks!

Went for original, in the meantime fitted Parrot handsfree phone kit and shouldn't be too hard to convert its line-in to USB

Looks really nice mate.

I wanna go for more of an SQ sound so am also looking for speakers all round and a sub in the boot.

What are the digital readouts for?

Problem is that the designated kickspace and parcel shelf loudspeaker cut outs are very limited (only 4x6" or 10*15cm) but with a sub the lack of bass can be compensated indeed. Would probably best to use a crossover to pass through only high and midrange and then a power amp to feed the 4 speakers, and add an active sub for the low frequencies.

Digital read outs are for voltage, oil temp and oil pressure, group project we did a few years ago.

Yes,

I have been checking the sizes of the parcel shelf cutouts, the E21 I'm going to look at has these huge 6x9 adaptors that look pretty crap so I want to install something that looks more original.

I'm looking at components up front with the tweeter at the top of the A Pillar or possibly on the door where the wing mirror sits, ran through a crossover, and decent sized speakers on the parcel shelf. Obviously the sub will be in the boot and everything will be powered by a top range 5 channel amp.

I could also add a proper crossover like my old Phoenix Gold EQ215 to finesse the sound and split it with a 4 channel and mono amp. But we'll see, I'll know better once I get the car and figure out wiring routes etc.

Those digital readouts are so cool, would you happen to have a link so I can check it out?

Cheers mate.

EDIT:
I've just found a Bavaria Mono radio here in Turkey for around 100 Euros, is that a good price?

Not to bad, but is that without cassette player? A stereo bavaria with cassette player is priced in the 120 - 150 euro range, I think.

Yes mate, it's the one without the cassette player, the very top one in the photos above.

I've also found an old skool Alpine flip out screen for 40 Euros but I think it may be too much of a faff to try and get android running through it.

Not sure if it'll suit the E21 though.

Hi mate and welcome here
Concerning digital gauges (or as mentioned in this thread: read outs) : I spoke to Peter recently (the guy that made them) and he informed me that he has restarted making them as some people asked. So you may be lucky

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm going to have a look at the car next weekend as I'm flying to Swtizerland tomorrow, so if I buy it I'll definitely look into buying the kit.

So, back to the radios, no more photos? :)

I've bought the monitor Alpine headunit as the seller dropped to 30 Euros so I'm just going to flip it, I've been looking at other headunits that will suit the look of the E21 but still haven't come up trumps. Currently checking out more Alpine headunits, plus other 80s/90s era headunits from Pioneer (not really a fan of their sound) and Nakamichi (lovely units)

I've also bought from the US a Phoenix Gold EQ215 Equaliser and M50 amplifier and will be delivered some time next week, I had these before in my E36 M3 before I stupidly sold them. The M50 runs at 1ohm stable so could run something meaty off it - possibly the Kicker L7 Solo Baric or the Original Cerwin Vega Stroker sub (the one with the pin in the centre). The original MTX Audio Thunder is another possibility if I can find them.

Some good plans!

Details as to what car you're going to take a look at? Made me real curious!

It's the car from my other thread;
https://www.sahibinden.com/ilan/vasita- ... 975/detay/
(I'm hoping that they're original Hartge wheels on the car, it was imported from Germany in 2010. I'll sell the wheels and the car will be free!)

I have also got these on my watchlist;
https://www.sahibinden.com/ilan/vasita- ... 257/detay/
(2nd choice to go and have a look at if first one is no good)

https://www.sahibinden.com/ilan/vasita- ... 212/detay/

https://www.sahibinden.com/ilan/vasita- ... 140/detay/
(this one is in bits and needs putting back together)

Ah ok! We're going slightly off topic but here are a few first thoughts:

https://www.sahibinden.com/ilan/vasita- ... 975/detay/
pre-facelift front which may indicate previous accident damage, interior not original, but the wheels may be interesting indeed

https://www.sahibinden.com/ilan/vasita- ... 257/detay/

https://www.sahibinden.com/ilan/vasita- ... 212/detay/
quite rough bodywork

https://www.sahibinden.com/ilan/vasita- ... 140/detay/
US version but non US engine which may be 315 or 316? What does the chassis number (VIN) say? Restored chassis can be interesting but only if you can check how good the work was performed.

Yeah sorry if it's gone off topic.

The first link though, where did that interior come from? Will definitely check for a front end shunt, I did wonder about the single headlights on it being an 82 model.

The last one I have no idea about the VIN number although in the listing it says it's a 315.
