Power Steering Leak - Persistent

Post by e21paddy »

Hello all,

I’ve had the rack on my car refurbished twice by a pretty reputable company, only to have it leak again on me!

Is it possible to use additives to swell the seals on these units? The filter in the reservoir surely wouldn’t like them?

Any advice, as I cannot face going back to that company again for the 3rd time!

Was that a quick 'n dirty refurb or an overhaul? After a full overhaul a rack should not leak and not require addititives of course. If they made a mistake, have them fix it. Assuming you paid them... then some return would be expected, right?

Hi Jeroen,

I have already had their work redone a second time and it seems the issue was never solved. All seals were changed so I presume that constitutes an overhaul. Next time I will do it myself, but for the time being I would like to temporarily plug the leak.

I have a spare power steering rack that I will recondition in the mean time!

understand, but plugging the leak may be the issue, big chance it's a bad seal, perhaps wrong type.

Plugging the leak is the short term solution (road test Monday)!

In the meantime, I've sent an email to the remanufacturers for comment on how the rack could be leaking again.

Hi paddy. Which company did you use? I'm searching for someone to refurb my PS rack an would like to avoid any company that can't fix the leak.
