Post by jcreegan »

Is there a good guide on changing timing belt on 1981 323i anywhere on site,
Can this job be done by one person?

Yes this is a good description.
But to clarify:
Do i have to remove the hood-bonnet?
If the ignition distributor pulley is out is is easy to retime?

No need to remove the hood. Ignition distributor does not have to be removed but retiming requires some patience. Because of the stape of the cogwheels it is pretty difficult to get it back in nearly the same position, after refitting it is best to adjust timing with a strobe. But why remove it in the first place?

I cannot get the belt over the tension wheel .I have pushed the tension wheel as far as it will go.
Is there a trick to this.

It is all real tight but it can be done. Start at the bottom, make sure the belt is on the crank and ignition cogwheels real tight, no slack in between. Remove tensioner spring, relax tensioner all the way, and then you should just be able to carefully slide it over the camshaft wheel.

Before starting, make sure you have the right belt: rounded or square teeth, number of teeth, length.

I assume you've already figured this out, but try putting a wrench on the crank and turning it very slightly clockwise. It will help create a little more slack on tensioner-side of things, and help get the belt on.

I saw the link for the Dutch version of the timing belt job…any way someone has a similar post in English? Specially with pictures. Much appreciated.
