Heater and ventilation control panel

Post by Pierorosso »

The lights on the heater and air ventilation panel on my 1981 BMW E21 316 are not working and I think the bulbs need replacing.

I have gleaned some information but it is vague.

Is it correct that the panel is illuminated by one light and prisms somewhere under the hazard flasher button? I have removed the grille above the hazard flasher button to see inside but I am reluctant to remove the hazard flasher button to investigate further because of the fragile nature of this item.

If the information I have is correct and the light is in that space, I will remove the hazard flasher button to replace the bulb.

I would be most grateful for any information anyone may be able to provide me with.
Thank you

You'll best take of that center panel, indeed one lichtbulb.

Thank you for your valued help. I thought it might be the way forward ... but I am dreading doing it. 39-year-old plastics can be very brittle 😬

Yup, remove carefully or the cables migt break off. Alternatively, if you remove the lower part of the centre console (from radio frame to gear shifter) you might be able to reach behind the heater control panel. If someone can add a picture of the rear of the control panel you know where your hand should be, I believe there is one bulb somewhere in the middle, perhaps a small mirror and a torch may help you locate it, or follow the wires, not many other electronics behind that section.

Thank you, it seems like the easier option. If anyone has a photo of the rear of the panel that would greatly help. So glad I joined!!!👍🏻

Sadly I don't have one on hand I'm afraid. BTW welcome here and feel free to introduce yourself and your car in the Owner's Gallery one day!

Both Uwbuurman and Jeroen are correct. Nevertheless, recently I replaced this bulb as well, but I was told to use the center grille above the hazard flasher. Taking out the flasher isn't the big risk I believe, taking it apart is. The bulb itself sits in the middle, next to the lower side of the center turning button (fan speed). It's a bitch but it can be done. With your hand through the grille and trying to illuminate from below (through the ashtray opening, for instance) it can be done.

Good luck!

Greetz,
Walter.

I thought the ventilation channels were in the way for this approach but if it works this approach might be even easier!

It won't be easy, any which way you do this. But it is doable.

Thank you all! I think I’ll have a go through the top first using my wife’s smaller hands 😂 ... If that doesn’t work then I’ll try from underneath. Those cable clips frighten me 😬
