316 Historic rally project

Post by Markw »

Now I've worked out how to post pictures, here goes!

Image

Currently being prepared for Classic Rallying. Lots to do still, and lots to learn!!

Image

Front suspension. Bilstein sports. Poly bushes. Quick rack. 323i vented discs. Uprated springs.

Image

Image

Rear Bilstein Sports 2 1/4" springs. Polybushes. Solid beam mounts

Fuel and brake lines inside. It's a nice clean strong shell. Looks like it was rustproofed from new.

Image

I want to keep it as an M10 engined car. Webers etc.....

Image

Image

Nice shiney new manifold ready to fit.....

Image

Corbeau GTS seats on E21 runners. A right pain to fit at the correct height.

Don't have to, no. I'm pricing a Saftey Devices rear cage with a removeable diagonal at the moment. That will have to wait until I've sorted the suspension and a thousand and one other jobs.

why are your bushings purple? wich brand are they? are they new?
Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Bushes on the rear trailing arms are off the shelf Superflex ones. Rear beam mounts are homemade from nylon, so have some 'give'. (Not much!)

There seems to be bugger all available for the front though, so I've had to turn these from bar material supplied by Superflex. It's bloody expensive and there's lots of waste. Outer TCA/ roll bar mounts are stock new BMW parts with machined up Superflex material to fill the 'void'. You can't really make these too solid as there needs to be some compliance because of the geometry of the front end. Inner TCAs are also machined from bar stock.

Nice project and a clean shell indeed! No upgrades planned for the brakes?

Keep us posted!

Brakes must be period and from the 'model' concerned i.e. an E21. These comply and are Group 1 legal as well. Pads are Mintex 1144s at the moment.

Don't think it's worth going to 323i rear discs. Handbrake will suffer and is important for this sort of event. I'll have to see how it goes.

OK clear, at least this setup is vented and rebuilt which is a great help.

I did two trackdays with these mintex pads and ended up burning them in both cases so they're not my favorites but others have better experiences so better test 'em first.

If you too encounter problems good suggestions from own experience are Ferodo DS2500/3000, Carbone Lorraine and Hawk.
