Re: e21 project
I then started to work on the doors, bonnet, boot and the shell. I used Parimose paint stripper to remove the paint and 320 sanding discs on the metal. I had to send the bonnet off to a company (Envirostip) in Birmingham to help with the rust removal as it was too labour intensive to remove it all by hand. I then got a couple of car body work guys to come and do any filler work where required
Re: e21 project
Whilst the guys were doing the body work, it gave me a chance to have a look at some of the other parts that would need attention.
The sound insulation for the engine bay was for a left hand drive car so I needed to fit this, cut out the section required for my car and fill in the blank space. The wiring loom needed to be redone. The window trim needs attention I could not tell if it had some type of coating over the aluminium but I used 320 sand paper and worked down to 1200 wet and dry then used polishing compound with a sisal and buffing mop on a bench polisher. I have left a piece in the garden to see if it oxidises but it seems to be holding up quite well so far so I don't think I will be applying a clear coat over the trim pieces. I have also heard that it is quite hard to get clear coat to adhere to high polished metals. The brake, fuel lines and some nuts/bolts were cleaned, primed and sprayed black Lastly the rain flooded my shed and the seats were on the floor so they got completely soaked. I had to use a an upholstery cleaning machine to try and salvage them. The back seat still has a water patch but this was there when I got the car. Will give it another go before I am ready to fit them.
