320/6 from New Zealand

Post by brockzila »

Kaiora.

My name's Brent. I'm from Aotearoa, The land of the long white cloud.

Some call it middle earth, others call it New Zealand.

I have been sifiting round here for the last few months.

I'm the proud owner of a 320/6. It's just come out of the panel shop and was painted Matt black when I got it . Not it's final colour but it looks ok. It also needs more rust work as it looks like they only fixed the panel work and did not look at the floors.

The plan is e28 rear end with lsd, m50/52 conversion. E24 front hubs running Holden commodore calipers and rotors, fortune 500 coil overs. I have all the bits listed above as well as a 323 rusty parts car. (All but the Holden parts .But they are every where here.

I'm currently saving for a zf 5 speed and drive shaft to suit .I know this will need to be shortened.

These cars are incredably rare in nz. I have been told that when new they were double the price of a escort, or a viva, or a corolla. So there were not many of them and there is not as much of a nostalaga following as EVERY one in nz knows some one that has had a hot escort or cortina, bigger following for rally cars here as well.

Oh well I guess I will be seeing you all around.

The donor is repairable but it would be a massive amount of work . Every panel has bog. accedent repairs behind the drivers door .It's been resprayed x3 times. There are lots of rust repairs where the rust was ground out and pooed up. Sills are completely gone lights are gone, guards, doors, lh floor, the boot lip has had a repair that leaves Mich to be desired and nis an indication to the quality of the restof the work .

Thanks.

No rare is not valuable. And I have no interest.in keeping it stock. I got it go race, hill climbs and club events. What rare dose mean is that parts are.hard to find. Upgrading to the e28 rear end means it's a one off up grade with out needing to find diffs and axles on a regular basis. Holden commodores are every where. Discs are $100 less each than e34 discs. But also every single auto store has them on shelf. So if needed when out racingI can get new brakes, the largest auto chain in the country only has 3 e34 discs nation wide.

No real progress at this point.

Just more parts.

An original plastic BBS front spoiler. No cracks or signs of damage. Just needs s paint.

A getrag (that word spell checks to fetish. Haha) 220 was purchased as I had no intention of going bigger than a 2.5.

But then 3 days later a m52b28 came up for a song so a deposit has been paid and I will have it next weekend.

Some say the getrag will hold the b28 fine as the e21 is so light. Any one have tboughts/ real experience here.

A colour has been picked and paint will be the next big ticket item after the bushes and clutch.

Now gents. Just thinking out loud. As I will have the e36 ecu, motor and box , will be running a dif with a speed sensor, could I in theory run a e36 gauge cluster with out to much issue? I'm assuming they are a normal dash or is there more to with the OBDII.

.
Well that's it for now we'll see what else we can do I'll post some photos when I get a chance

Hello.

Well couple of things .

Can this please be moved to the modified section as its going to be far from stock.

Also would any one have any problems if I started a second thread for this car and run both side by side.

One thread for my build input , photos and updates and the other as a discussion thread for all comments questions and input form other people. ? The main forum I use in NZ old school.co.nz use this format and it works real well as you don't end up with lots of "nice work" "well done" comments in the build thread, so when reading the thread you can just see the action.

I'm not sure if it will fly here and the users on here are quite good, but I'm sure most of you have seen vagascops 80page punisher of a thread, lots of good information and detail, but most of it is third party comments and it takes days to read the whole thing.

The rust in the fire wall is from accident damage in its past. Looks like the the front wing has been replaced. I have the 323 to cut up for new steel.

Your car scares the shit out of me. I pray I don't end up as deep in as you are. You are doing an amazing job and it's inspiring and educational following it. It's given me enough knowledge to be able to look at mine and know how it comes apart to fix the rust because I have seen it done on your car already.

Been busy not doing much on the car, but been doing lots around the car .

Image
So I pulled the m20b23 out of the rusty 323. It's 4speed which is disappointing. T thought it was but now I know . The motor is going down to Hastings to aid duddly get his stroke on.

I also sold the motor that I had sitting on the stand, 2.0l iron has been replaced with 2.8 alloy. They look the same but they are not.
Image

I have lots of parts that need to be cleaned. And I have always wanted a media blaster.

So I have reclaimed some panels that have been left on the road side. Used an old stainless sink and have started. It's currently riveted, once I get a new liner for my mig and I'm happy I'll make some holes and plug weld it. But my cheap Chinese rivet gun broke. I also need to fold up the top. Need to sort out some 900 long angle stock to make the folds or better a long folding brake.

Image

Next up I performed some biopsy so see how bad the cancer was under the paint.

Looked in the common spots on one side. Found bog but no reason for it. Will see when I strip it right back

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

That is quite annoying a patch lap joint and not on the entire section so now under the bogg rust holes.

Enough for now.

Oh and I have also been doing this

Image

Image

And allot of time with this one

I need new photos. She's got so much more hair now.
