Post by Duracel79 »

Newbie here,

Been watching the site for a while, just never registered or posted.

Bought my car part converted to a race car about 1.5 years ago. Finally got it all finished this year for my first race with it in April.

Here are a few pics.

Yeah, it does handle well, just lacks a bit of power over my E30 2.7. I have registered it on the road as well, now that is amusing!!

No speedo mate, Just use satnav on the road.

I am looking to change to a 323i box its just I had the E30 one spare to use at short notice.

After my first race with it, I've got a few minor improvements to do now.

Just trying to resist slotting my high compression 2.7 in there to make it really fly ( It puts me outside the regulations for my championship!).

Hi

I was going to build a car for the classic group 1 (nearly bough the other yellow e21 also) and have a few ideas depending on your budget you could improve

Ditch the servo save weight and run a pedal box.
Run a motosport front spoiler and save weight
Bigger throttle body, fuel distributor other k-jet mods, custom inlet manifold (log type) or just a bigger 325i manfold
Later m20 rad setup better cooling, tropical spec water pump, m21 oil pump, crank scrapper, big sump.

The period 323 group2 cars made about 260bhp so there is more power there with out stroking the engine after market rods 7 pistons are about 1k.

Run a set of adjustable top mounts on the struts.

What brake set up are you running?

Drop me a line if you have any questions

Hi Jason,

Got a few of those in the pipeline. E30 325 manifold with big bore throttle to go on. Just need time to sort out the injector mounts. Already fitted an E30 water pump, new recored radiator with electric fan.

As for the Suspension, I was really happy with it for the race, the car was very stable and progressive even when we had a shower during the Group 1 race. I ran at about -2.5 degrees camber all round and a bit of toe out at the front. The car has modified TCA's for the front and Camshell slotted inner wishbone mounts at the rear.

At Lydden the biggest problem I had was the wrong gearing/rev range for pulling up the hill. I needed either more low down torque, lower gearing (may compromise elswhere aroung the circuit?) or increasing the rev range (was capped at about 6955, most i could get the original limiter set to before the races, also with a fairly fresh engine but soon 8k should be possible).

As for the larger metering unit, I Had thought of that, I just havn't researched what models came with appropriate units. Some thing like a Porsche 944 2.5 I suppose.

Before I do any more mods though, I'm going to get it run up on a rolling road to see where i'm starting from.

Thanks for the comments, Keep them coming.

Hi
The Porsche 911 turbo/928 and merc V8’s all use larger metering units also you also want to pick up the throttle body and bellows. With the V8 units you can blank of the extra outlets and on all of them you can shim the pressure regulator to adjust it.
Also under the regs as you already run electronic ignition which picks up engine speed and manifold pressure I reckon you could mega jolt from a crank trigger and map sensor then you will be able to create a custom curve.
Also do you have an idea of spring rates and are you running a rear anti roll bar, a lot of US races take them off but I think that is because their tracks are smoother and they run higher spring rates.
I have zender over bumper body kit for sale you could ditch the front bumper & valance and rear bumper saving about 10kg’s plus a set of merc hi flow k-jet injectors.
Also did you get your quick rack from me.

My DS2500's are the same as for the MK1 Lotus Elise as i recall, so that's undoubtedly why there are yellowstuff available. You just need to know which car had the same shape pads.

I should be able to get some pics from under the car this weekend.
I'll post them next week.

Jason
No idea where the rack came from, most of the major bits were already on the car when I bought it. The rack still utilises a damper so looks stock but is only 2.5 turns lock to lock.
As for spring rates I seem to remember them being 425lb front and 400lbs rear, so not too hard. I'm running both standard front/rear roll bars and standard bushes all round.
Didn't realise there were different size injectors for K-jet, but i was under the impression the 323i ones can fuel about 50bhp each (300 total.) I know that all depends if you can get the air in to burn it. Was it Alpina or Schnitzer that did the turbo'd 323i with K-jet and about 300bhp?

For ignition i've still got a Dizzy at the moment and the regs say you can't alter the original sparks ie change to ECU controlled.

Jagclarke
Brakes are standard, apart from being aluminium Alfa SZ Brembo calipers up front and W&N drilled discs. I sourced the pads through Fritz Bitz along with both Of my Strut braces and the exhaust manifold.
Rear pads are standard, as they don't do very much anyway.
They yellowstuff pads do need warming up but the really bite once hot.
From your username thought you might like this pic of me at brands in my dads race car.
