Size says it all, and the difference between 4 and 5 speed is the length. Argree with Jeroen, pic of the whole thing, from the side is all we need to determin.
Late 5 speed is shorter than the 4 speed.

In highest spot gearbox is flat surface and stamped some numbers + two letters.
Those letters:
T or BO -> m10 Getrag 245 CR
BJ or GJ -> m20 Getrag 245 CR
BN,GH or GL -> m10 Getrag 245 OD
GC,GG or GM -> m20 Getrag 245 OD
ME,MF -> m10 Getrag 240 OD
MG -> m20 Getrag 240 OD
CR = "sport" and OD = overdrive
Would you mind marking this place (stamped numbers) on some example photo please?

Is that a fact? Never seen that.

Only with the very latest 5 speeds, these do not have the extension anymore and are a few cm's shorter than the 4-speed indeed.

This is what I remember. No way a late 5 speed is shorter than the 4 speed. The photo says it all. Tnx!
