Noisy catalytic converter

Post by PeterCS »

I have a very noisy converter - likely a lot of pieces rattling around.
Any solutions other than getting a new or used replacement?
It is a 1982 Euro 315.
I live in Ontario, Canada and am not sure if I am allowed to remove it altogether. That would be my preference.
Always appreciate your assistance.
Happy New Year to all.

As the Euro 315 never had a cat from the factory, was it fitted at a later stage? Or is it just the stock 1st silencer that rattles due to loose components inside? In that case replacing it may be fairly cheap.

Joeren - wow that might be good news. The car (a Baur) was imported to California from Europe and then sold to a Canadian who in turn sold it to me about 12 years ago. It is definitely a Euro cat with the small bumpers.
Is it common for the first silencer to start rattling?
Does the car need to have both silencers? Too noisy otherwise?
Many thanks for your help.
Thrilled it is not a converter. If the car never had one, the local laws do not require you to put one on.

Well it's something to check, we all know the Californian emission requirements so a cat may be retrofitted, but chances are small.

Exhaust rattles are not known weakpoints but hey, the silencer may be decades old, could btw also be an exhaust support bracket, I'd check that first.

If you're not unhappy with a bit more exhaust sound you can always try a muffler delete first of course
