E21 clutch master cylinder rebuild.

What is the correct way to install the seals on the piston in the clutch master cylinder? Does the seal on the pedal side have the wide side face into the cylinder.

That is correct, also see images below (E30 piston but similar).

Make sure to hone the cylinder properly, clean it out, and fit the piston with the new seals with a lot of care and some brake assembly lube to prevent the new seals from getting damaged during reassembly.

I used Frenkit 419007 .The piston is the same as mine and I have fitted seals correctly.
I cannot get the rear seal to go into the cylinder. The seal catches on the inner edge and won't enter.I don't want to use too much force.
What is the rubber seal on the bottom of your photo for.thete was,nt one on mine.

Usually it needs some fiddling, but you can also make a little paper sleeve to help it in, similar to how you fit piston rings.

That rubber seal is at the foot of the brake fluid tank, in case you remove that for a good cleanup

I used feeler gauge to ease piston in.
