This is a great piece of work, got me thinking about the M42 swap all over again!

Would I be right in thinking that you could just source a bellhousing from the more common getrag 240 (E30 318i) seeing as you can bolt an M42 straight to it?

Yes, but you don´t have mechanical speedo!

A great write up, I've just done this myself:

What I would add to this is to expand about the lateral plug:

The plug in question is this:

We struggled initially because we thought this was just a blanking plug.
There's not much room under neath to get under it so we welded some threaded bar on but we managed with a screwdriver for the second box.
Once this is out and all the other bolts you really don't need a lot of force to get them separated.
