Understood the wiring was a mess so that may be the cause for the windows. I'm not too familiar with E28 electricals but if they have the door pillar electrical connectors these defo are under suspicion, the cause of at least 50% of all electrical issues with E30's for example. And there might be a safety breaker circuitry on the windows as well perhaps.
As for overheating: if you have enough flow and the thermostat opens far enough, you could check iginition timing but it could also be the temp sender...

Re: my e28 project
im having a little issue starting my car wondering if anyone can help what i should look for.
so car started no problems last week, but hasnt been driven in a week. i tried firing it the other day, and well.... my backbox blew up to the point of splitting. thats not really an issue for me as im replacing it.
the car seems to turn over and cough occasionally but does not start up. i took the plugs out to check if the engine was flooded and well the plugs were soaked in petrol. so i dried them off. let the engine breath and let the petrol evaporate. yet nothing. how can i check manually at home whether the spark is strong enough? im also charging my battery as a precaution.

Re: my e28 project
Well there may already be too much fuel in there to just let it evaporate, usually I pull the fuel pump relay and do a few more starting attempts to get rid of the excess fuel. But if I understand correctly you had a backfire?
There are simple spark testers but you could at least do an inspection on all plug connections, the condition of rotor arm and dizzy cap. With that cleaned up and fresh power from the battery the car may be good to go again.. after getting rid of the excess fuel!

thats for the advice Jeroen. i walked out today to check if i was getting any spark, but before i started i thought to myself, ahh let me just turn over the engine... who knows, i might get lucky.... and well i got lucky. car started up no problems. i guess the fuel just needed to evaporate. problem sorted
