that was my original plan. it isn't that easy to do a neat job as the dial is a mm or two short and its getting the rear of the speedo stable means fabricating a new box or bodging it a bit

unfortunately when i removed the sound insultation from the bay i ruined the car, you couldn't hold a convo at motorway speeds, and it was terrifically loud. i decided to fit some comfort and refinement back into the car.

stripping the interior took about an hour or so, I inspected the floor pan again and no sign of any damage and gave it all a clean and cracked on.

I couldn't remove the sound insulation that goes behind the firewall on the cabin side, but I was able to stick a number of large pads behind it. i then decided that the best action would be to "double it up" with another layer of foam and vinyl.

After conducting research i found that the key is to dampen vibrations (silent coat), decouple (closed cell foam), and then block (mass loaded vinyl (MLV))

started with the doors - i covered all the gaps and stuck about three panels on the inside of the door.

did the rear quarters and wheel arches - initially one sheet but then i didn't think it was enough so i stuck about 3 in each rear quarter in the end.

the whole floor area and rear panel was covered with pads, but you don't need to use them to completely cover the floor, they are actually not soun insulators more like vibration dampers, i did the whole of the floor like this - covering about 50-70 percent of the panel areas.

covered the interior with foam, from the rear shelf all the way to the behind the pedals and up the dash

then put some more MLV into the foot wells (ignore the wiring i was part way through re-wrapping it) - I also put some mass loaded vinyl from the rear screen behind the rear seat to the floor. i didn't use all of the roll as its actually heavy stuff 5kg per square meter.

as i have increased the depth of the insulation by 14mm getting the rear seats was a bit of a nightmate - i had to slightly bend the hangers on the rear shelf to allow more room for the seat to slide back on

started refitting my carpet, it went back in ok even with the extra material under it.

car feels so much nicer to drive, instant improvement, from when you shut the door. I took my mate out for a drive and we was able to have a conversation without having to shout even at high speeds. it seems to have managed to cut the amount of road noise down significantly, nothing seems to rattle anymore either. unfortunately i have made the sub woofer in my boot much less apparent now but then again im thinking of upgrading the whole stereo system in there at one point its as its very basic..

My plan is to also sound deaden the boot and get it re-trimmed at a later stage to match the cabin. Ill do that some other time

this job took me a couple of weekends. partly because i had other stuff to do round the house and also because it was so hot. If any of you decide to undertake this job i used

80 sheets of silent coat sound deadening - £80
MLV - (mass loaded vinyl) £40 (about 10 square meter roll)
Closed cell foam - £35 (0 square meter roll)
A roll of ducktape and some spray glue to hold stuff in place

If you are not using the glovebox, one option is to make a downfiring subwoofer in the glovebox (it has 15 liters, so a 8"-9" subwoofer fits), you have to make a mould of the glovebox surroundings and a sealed compression box (polyester resin, thickness 8-10mm).

Oh man that sounds like a lot of pain Tbh. I was thinking some under seat woofers would do the trick?
