just took out the engine for complete rebuild, generally not to bad, engine was a bit rattly when we got it, and just found the fault, a broken main valve spring on number three inlet !! could have been disasterous !! going to replace the chains and guides, all gaskets and generally anything slightly worn out. then going to machine off the aircon pulley, lighten the flywheel repaint and rebuild that easy  should keep me busy for a couple of wekends!!

Hahaha yep some work to keep you inside on the darker and colder days

Plan to make any changes or will it be a stock rebuild?

Just out of curiosity... there are quite some differences between S14 engines, one being much more rattly than the other. Are these broken valve springs common? I can imagine that a broken valve spring can go unnoticed (oh well apart from the noise) as there is always another valve being operated right next to it. And if one of these springs breaks at the end, the valve might still be operated.

it ran o.k with broken spring, but just didn't sound right, it hasn't bent any valves, the car had been stood and my guessing is that the valve had stuck with it being rusty, ive heard of it happening before but generally the engine after inspection is good, new rings, tensioners and gaskets to fit, machining the flywheel abit and the front air con pulley off, so should be crisp..

OK thanks, makes sense.

I'm just wondering why one S14's valvetrain is quite quiet and the other S14's is quite noisy... this could be the cause but if the engine runs fine it's hard to say.

Did that spring break in two even halfs or did a little part of top or bottom come off?

it was a clean break in the middle and didn't part company. just finished lapping the valves in and block cleaned and painted ready for rebuild.
