Thought I would share some pictures of my new motor

But my iPad won't let me copy and paste more than one a once

So here's another one

I got big plans but won't be carrying them out until next year. Need to save up some monies first.
The car is surprisingly slow. I had a mk1 golf gti. Much faster. However it's probably not running quite right.

Welcome fella. Cool car.

It might be the old Solex that's blunting performance? Get yourself a Weber, or better still, drop an injected 2.5 in there.

So what are your plans anyway? Where are you in the UK?

Looks like a nice basis though!

Hi Crazy Nick,

Is your car the Edition E model? Very nice. As Mark says, the solex is problematic; I also have a 320/6 and did the Weber 38 DGMS conversion with good results - I had to fiddle with idle jet sizing but the rest was simple. The problem with my solex was the vacuum operated secondary choke - the vacuum was eratic so the motor couldn't breath when full throttle was applied - stiffling performance. However, a 320/6 probably won't be as quick as the Mk1 GTI you'll need a 323i!

Yes it is the edition E model. It has already got a weber carb. It goes but just not very quickly.
My plan is to completely redo everything including paint job, and engine.
As far as the engine is concerned I'm sticking with a N/A straight six with an aim of about 200bhp. So maybe a M20 2.5 on Carbs or throttle bodies. I have read that the M30 engine could be too heavy?

M30 is the way Alpina and others did the power - the M60 B20 motor is a gem, alot sweater than the 2.3l; i'm sure that 180 bhp could be extracted albeit at a cost - saving the handling and the heritage of what you have. I'll keep an eye on your thread. The run-out models are very rare - best of luck with your project.

With a Weber I run @ 24 degrees BTDC with 3.5% CO - runs sweet and accelerates cleanly all the way to the redline! Check your cam belt and fuel pump as both when past their best can limit performance - also check that the fuel return valve is present; Weber apparently didn't consider it part of the up-grade but fuel starvatation is a problem at higher revs.

Oh rite. I may have to have a read up on the Alipna E21 then. I want to stick to a straight six to be honest.

You make some interesting points about the fuelling setup. My car doesn't seem to have a power band. It feels like 70bhp all the way from 1k revs to 6k revs. Maybe it's not getting enough fuel like you say. However it does seem to be thirsty. Maybe it's the way it's delivered, too rich or something.

As for the project, I won't be starting it until next year, but I do want it done for next spring. I want to get most of the bits together before I start. Then I can get on with it without having to wait for bits and stuff
