New starter installed, along with new engine wiring harness and new battery. Car still does not start, starter does not even engage. When the key is in the off position the battery light comes on. When in on position dash functions as normal, fuel gage, temp gauge, even the night light engage. Headlights both high and low function. Radio functions as well. When turned to the start position nothing happens, no whirring, clicking, or anything else from the starter. Do I have something wired incorrectly? Losing my mind over this at this point.

The starter motor consists basically out of two cylinders. The big one is the motor and the small one is the switch for the motor. There’s a number of connections. There are two M8 studs for the main positive and a smaller connection to engage the switch. Put a wire on this small connection and touch the positive of the battery. The starter motor should turn the motor. From the wiring loom there should be a small connection as well, remove this if needed.

Second, and this is a bit more tricky, take an old screwdriver and connect the two M8 studs together. Don’t touch anything else and it can spark a bit. The motor should turn.

Automatic trans ? Could the starter inhibitor be bad on the gear selector or the relay/wiring from the gear selector to the ignition switch connected under the dash..

Do the two M8 studs both get a wire hooked up to them? Because on the starter that I replaced I think both wires leading up to them were on one stud on the driver side of the solenoid? I lost the photos I took while working on it because my phone broke and it hadn’t backed up? I could be misremembering how they were hooked up.

OK got the engine to crank, don’t actually fire up because it’s been sitting so long I need to get some fuel stabilizer in it and some new gas. The battery light does still come on even with the key out of the ignition. Is it just because the battery might be low or do I still have something wired wrong. Regardless I am extremely happy it’s turning over after 1/2 a year in my garage.
