Have decided we need a bigger car for family holidays etc so looking at getting a Saab 9-5 estate (about a 2000 plate) - have convinced myself and my wife we need the hot aero ( ) and have found one I like - anybody got one / had one and got any advice before I part with the cash?
Just to clarify - I'm keeping the 323!! Hopefully will be able to use the Saab as a daily and start to put some time into fully restoring the BM.

ive heard that the ecu on these can give problems... work college was a mater tech for them... as i was looking at them a while back... volvo t5r est are pretty cool though...

I've been looking at the 850 R and v70 R as well, but my wife's not keen on the boxier look of them - they seem to cost a bit more than the Saabs as well - although I would defo have one!
Only other thing I have to overcome is insurance costs - since I was 25 I've had old cars and classic car policies which means you can't build up a no claims - so despite 8 years of claim free driving I've got 0 no claims to use on the Saab!
ive had a few sabbs in the past ie..three 900 turbos and two 9000 2.3 turbos aeros.. nice motors but exspensive for parts.. i had them tuned by abbott racing... maybe give them a call saying you are buying one and what would you need to worry about/ problems ect... whilst asking them how much they would chip it for!.

Well, got myself a 9-5 aero estate - I pick it up on Saturday, happy days!
Will be able to take the 323 off the road for a while and sort some of the annoying niggles that bug me every time I drive it. Will also try and get my bbs spoiler sprayed and fitted. I know taking it off the road just before the summer isn't ideal, but it's the only time I can get to do some work on it
The Saab should be fun in it's own way though with 250bhp through the front wheels!
900 turbos are great cars - I've had 2 over the years, I love the feel of them inside with the narrow wraparound windscreen - and the speed, man they shift!
900 turbos are one of the great cool cars.... love them or hate them like marmite..... even better when abbot racing have fitted there goodies to em... my best one was a black 900 aero (G reg) with there charge cooler and ecu upgrade.. dump valve was a must back then... down pipe back system and the carlson wide three spoke wheels and a carlson rear spoiler..... and i was only 22/23... ahh... if only now.. it died a horriable death on the side of the A40... con rod through the block!!! adjustable boost is a bad thing....

Would you believe it - my 'new' 9-5 aero has blown it's turbo after only 60 miles and 3 days of ownership!! It's only got 98k on the clock so mileage not that high.
Not the end of the world though as it's covered under the warranty - it's just going to take a week to get it back as it's being taken to a saab specialist for the work.
Annoyingly I posted the tax back to the DVLA for the 323i as I was going to take it off the road and do some work on it - so I'm car less now!
As for the old 900 turbos I'm really tempted to sell the BMW and get one - as you said with the 16" super aero alloys and the 3 extra dials - not sure how that idea will go down on this forum!

how about a nice e36 estate? or even a budget e46? much bigger, nice n comfy, roomy and fairly good on fuel if you get a fairly decent mileage diesel or sumin
Nooo, I have to keep the 9-5! I bought it as a family car which now means I can get away with running a classic as a second car. I looked at e36 tourers (not big enough!), e39 tourers (out of my budget for a facelift model) Audi A6s (powerful ones too juicy), Audi A4s, Volvo 850s, Volvo V70s ...... I went for the Saab as I've always had a soft spot for them and there's less of them around, plus I was suckered in by the power and punch it has in the mid range. This one looks pretty good too, it's an 02 estate in grey with the 17" alloys and is going to be ideal for the motorway drive to work everyday and a bit of hooning around when I'm on my own in it as it is the aero model!
IF I sell anything it'll be the 323, but everytime I polish it up I realise how great it looks. I think it's because the little things that need doing bug me most times i drive it that i toy with selling it, but If I can get the work done on it realtively easily I'm fairly sure I'll keep it.
Turbo went on second day of ownership.
Noticed wipers not working properly same day.
Significant Oil leak.
Engine management light on.
Knock from the engine.
It's been in under warranty 4 times - spent 6 weeks in the garage and 3 weeks on the road!!
Turbo now replaced, oil leak done, knocking sorted by replacing gearbox torque restrictor, BUT the bloody garage have buggered it up and now the car cuts out under hard acceleration, and they still haven't even fixed the wipers!!
The newest car I've ever bought has been a big bag of shite!! I should have just lived with the bumpy ride of the 323 and saved some money , incidentally 323 flew through it's MOT the other day and hasn't let me down in nearly a year of onwership!
