Ferrari 365 - A Guide

NB: I did this post for another, completely different forum; hopefully it's of interest here.

Just to clear something up at how Ferrari arrived at '365'.
V6 and V8 models used the total displacement for the first two digits and the number of cylinders as the third. Thus, the 206 was a 2.0 V6, while the 348 used a 3.4 V8. However, the V12 models used the displacement per cylinder (in cc) for all three digits. Therefore, the 365 Daytona had a 4380 cc engine (365 times 12).

365 GTS
Like the 330 GTC, the 330 GTS was replaced in 1968 by the 365 GTS. Again a simple re-engine job, this Spider featured the same styling changes as the coupe. Just 20 were built before its place was assumed by the 365 GTB/4-based Daytona Spider.



365GTB/4. The unofficial Daytona name is reported to have been applied by the media rather than Ferrari themselves and commemorates Ferrari's 1-2-3 finish in the February 1967 24 Hours of Daytona with the 330 P4.

OK, this is a cheat; every Miami Vice fan knows this one is a Tom McBurnie kit car based on a C3 Corvette:



365 GTC/4, a personal favourite of mine. based on the chassis of the Daytona, it lasted but one year before being replaced by the Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2.






365 GT4 2+2
A 2+2 grand tourer car from Ferrari, introduced in 1972 to replace the 365 GTC/4. Its chassis was derived from that of the Daytona. It was replaced in 1976 by the almost identical looking 400 Automatic.

You gotta love the sound of a V12 . Nice write up, I kind of an Italian car lover. My favorite must be the 365 GT 2+2 or the 365 GT4 2+2. I've seen the last car (the one in you're picture) in real life last year on the Concours the Elegance in Apeldoorn. Great car to see, but would love to own one. Reminds me I have to post pics of a E12 Alpina I saw there last year aswell.

About the movie of the red Daytona, it almost seems like abuse to me. This car is made to be driven, but it is also a real classic which should be loved and cared aswell. Not to be used for doing smoking launches and such. In my opinion at least...

Indeed a really nice story about the Ferrari's. I once had the pleasure of sitting and co-driving in a 512 BB and it was an huge experience. At that time i did not had a drivinglicence but i still enjoyed it very much.

Driving or being driven in a Italian sports car is a great expirience! In 2009 I visited Italia for a holiday. Of course visiting the Ferrari museum, walk around the Ferrari factory and just getting the whole Ferrari vibe is really great.

Just get yourself a seat near the factory or the testtrack and you'll have the day of you're life. Of course you see fully covered new cars heading for the test track (in 2009 I saw the 458 more than once, fully covered in black plastic), costumers driving of in their new toy, clubs driving around for fun, Maranello is just Ferrari town.

After visiting the Ferrari museum I got the chance to drive one my self. I had to choose between a newer F430 with a F1 paddle gear box or a slightly older 360 Modena which had a manual gear box. I choosed the yellow 360 and had the best drive till today! It's a real mechanical car, heavy clutch, heavy gearbox, no sight at all, but it is bloody fast!



Of course after this Ferrari madness I got my BMW hat back on, rented a nice speed boat to make everyone on the Garda lake mad because of the high speed



After this holiday I bought a Maserati 422 from 1989, which had an 2 liter v6 with double turbo. Great car, felt a lot of comparisation between the 360 as for beeing a real mechanical car aswell.

I love beefy, precise, mechanical changes as well; I don't see the point of a flappy paddle gearbox that shifts 0.1 seconds faster, in reality it doesn't make you go any quicker unless you have a hardcore track car.
The Lamborghini Gallardo Balboni has a proper manual gearshift in place of the F.P.B. because thats' how Valentino Balboni, their chief test driver, wanted it.
That tells you something.
