BMW E3 Estate

Post by arshad76 »

I think Mark posted a photo of one of these a while back. Interesting article on a number of these being converted in the U.K. Has anyone else heard of the folks who did the restoration in Illinois in the States called, The Werks Shop? http://www.thewerkshop.com

They seem to do some very clean work and on their website show details of creating a bespoke E39 M5 estate for a customer, even welding in the rear tyre well so that the dual exhausts could be carried over.

Anyway, enjoy!

Eta Motorsport had a 3.0si one in their yard when I first started seriously getting into BMW's circa 1988/89. I remember is had an Austin Westminster tailgate I think? Might have been converted by Crayford in Dartford, Kent. My memory is awful though, so that might not be accurate.

No that makes sense. It wasn't an official conversion and I think that's what they mention in the parts used. It's a cool car I guess, but out of the two I'd still opt for the saloon any day.

Me want!! What a beautiful car.
Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you.

It was indeed Crayford that built them, but also FLN Panelcraft. I remember seeing an FLN converted 3.O SI for sale in about '88/89 but I've never seen one since. I had heard that BMW Motorsport built a few of their own in the early '70s as chase/spares/mechanics barges to support the E9 touring cars but I've never seen one. The Crayford converted cars used Maxi tailgates. See, something useful did come from BL in the '70s! :D
