Highlights in the UK

Post by Thegs »

Hi all,

As I will be attenting the BMW meet in Gaydon this year, I'll have a week of holiday aswell in the UK. My plans are driving up to Scotland and then making my way back to the south in a couple of days. Probably will be camping with a little tent, so I'm also up for some good campsites.

What are the places I need to visit? Or any roads I need to drive? Hope to get some nice suggestions before leaving the country

Cheers!

Regards, Gerwin

I spent this morning looking at a pair of Ospreys on our river!

If you come to the Highlands why don't you spend some time exploring our Strath at

I'm coming in from Calais to Dover. On the 18th I'm planning to attend the BMW meet at Gaydon (or the RetroRides meeting, can't decide). After that I have a full week to report back at Dover. Woul'd love to go all the way up to Scotland, don't mind to drive a couple of miles a day.

From gaydon you are on the m6 side of the country so I would head up to the lake district, most people head for Windermere but I would head west to places like Langdale and wastwater both have campsites and pubs

From there you have 2 choices stay west and head to the west coast of scotland
Isle of Arran
Loch Lomond and the trosscahs area calander etc
And if you want push north to fort William
Then back down south

The other alternative is to head to Edinburgh (festival in aug so very busy but there are campsites out of town) cross country to moffat, grey mares tale, innerliethen, gorebridge, edinbugh.
From Edinburgh either north around the fife coast or drop south take the a68 through Northumberland to Newcastle then back

Lots of good roads but you need to sort of know them as they are back roads
May fave drives are
Do a lap of Arran
Dukes pass in the Trossachs
A68 newcastle to Edinburgh
The road past gray mares tail (waterfall) near moffat
The bigger to Edinburgh road a702
The moffat to Edinburgh road a701
Carlisle to Edinburgh on the a7
Hardknott Pass in the lake district.

Not many automotive specific things to see unless you can arrange a visit to m sport in Cumbria. Lots of old houses/castles stunning scenery good pubs and the occasional steam railway.

great suggestions for driving there

we are a bit further north (near Inverness)

and be warned the A9 Perth to Inverness road whilst lovely has speed and radar guns to make up for the fact that it should have been dual carriageway at the outset!

you could always take a ferry from Lancaster/Heysham (near Lake district) to the Isle of Man - where we have Manx Grand Prix a classic Motorbike racing event.
John the A4 Alpina will be on IOM racing his bikes

the roads on IOM have NO speed limits on derestricted sections!

Thanks guys!

@ Koos, you have no idea how I make things fit...

@ Gerrit, wou're absolutely right, but that's not why I go on holiday :rev

@ Reck, mainly history and culture. Never been to the UK, Wales, Scotland before, so would love to see what it's like. Besides that we are huge rollercoaster fans, so a trip to Thorpe and Alton are booked :screwy
