The only thing you can clean in the AFM without the removal of the plastic black cover is the air temperature sensor (ATS). It is in the plastic black cage in the inlet port of the AFM

I've done it when i purchased the car.

I recommend to use nothing but a dry contact cleaner (electronic hardware shop should have it).
It has to be a dry cleaner cause you can't absolutely left your ATS with even a really tiny 'grease' film on it.
The dry contact cleaner is a spray and that spray also easy the removal of dust.

If you can't find the dry cleaner use alcohol or something that entirely evaporates without leaving traces on the ATS after the cleaning session.

Do not touch the ATS itself to clean it!

Just pour the cleaning liquid on it, and then blow on it to easy the evaporation.
In this sense the spray helps you, with his pressure, to clean the ATS.

There is also an AFM refurbishing procedure than can be carried out after 150000 km,i have done this too and the car performs really better and the consumption is decreased.
The procedure is a little more complicated and involves the careful removing of the plastic cover without break it.
After this, releasing the moving contacts support (the support linked to the rotating blade) bolt (do not absolutely touch the screw) allows you to make this support moving up and down.
The up and down provides those contacts to slide back and forward, going to rotate on a brand new ceramic track path instead moving in the deep scratches they have dig during the usage.

cheers
