Who designed the BMW diesels?

Post by TopCat »

Met a fascinating guy yesterday (Ok whilst out shooting Lars)

He took me up the mountain in his X6 335turbo with a remap by my friends at DMS Automotive- to 380 bhp.

He only bought the car as his business partner sold it to him cheap- we agreed it was a terrible car with a wonderful engine.

He is quite a car guy this chap with a Lambo Murcilago (can't spell) 4WD (612 bhp) and a hot Porsche. He had an engineering background and was a big player before selling out.

Anyway point of my message was not to point out how awful X6s are 23 mpg - rubbish off road - no room inside and too large outside- you will know all this
but to tell you that it was a team of very talented Rover/MG engineers who designed the 4 and 6 cylinder diesels whilst Rover was owned by BMW that BMW use to this day- including the 335 twin turbo beauty in the X6. He said that was one of the reasons why Honda fell out with Rover- because of the collaboration with BMW. Apparently Rover/MG engineers were well known for their prowess (like Lotus) and were seconded to a number of well known R&D schemes for well known manufacturers.
He did tell me the name of the principla bloke - think he said Brian xxx?

No wonder my MG ZT-T goes so well with that "BMW" turbo diesel- it was plainly designed from the outset for it-a crying shame that no credit seems to have gone where it allegedly is due.
