Yeah, of course
I'll do a for sale thread when I've got my head round what I'll be using and what's up for grabs. I'll be cutting patches out to get the 316 together and there will be about a fortnight window when people will be welcome to come with a grinder and cut out anything they need

Didn't get a chance to get on today as I had to sort the drive belt on the daily (absolute pain of a self adjusting mechanism!!))
But progress in that I spoke to the previous owner, I knew it had a replacement head around 2 years ago, n.o.s. He claimed, It has been confirmed it is the later e30 m10 head with the bigger valves. This will be the engine I will be sticking with as i know it runs well, has history and is more responsive to modification

The better half finally came down to see the cars yesterday and we have settled on what she wants. Surprisingly we are going for near standard with the 316.
This means the banana will be broken for parts. The headlight wash system and window motors are already spoken for but I'll have a fair few bits going up for sale.

She has decided that she can't have the 316 without power steering so that's going to be high on the priority list!

I don't know how I've missed this thread. I knew the Banana was bad but seeing proper photos... wow, "Chop Shop" special!

Try the 316 on the road before fitting PAS, she might just get away with it. E21s are not that heavy on the steering and PAS is rare and £££.

completly standard suspension, being the 3.6 it only has the rear SLS.
e39 rondells, 8.5x18 fronts 10x18 rear offsets around 20.

so its been an insane christmas and new year period, feel like i have barely had time to think let alone update!
work has been busy and from what i understand i'm going to be stuck on 6 day weeks so i'm not sure how progress is going to go.

pictures say a thousand words so lets get started!

found a unit and moved in -

then i started to find rust :wtf

Image

Image

thats just a selection, i pulled so much fiberglass out of it i just couldn't believe!

so i pushed it outside!

this came along-

Image

Image

forgot to get more pics of it outside.

its supposed to be a standard 2.0 but someone has fitted injection to it at some point.

the head gasket was gone so that was the first task.

Image

pretty clear failure!

Image

started to go back together -

Image

so i left it last night like this -

Image

its not far off now so im just busting to get to the unit but being an hour away from me i'll probably have to wait for the weekend.

on a side note i found my holy grail -

Image

managed to get them fitted to the mrs car last night in the cold rain and here are the fresh pics from a couple of hours ago when i finally saw it in the daylight ........

why i didn't close the bonnet for the pics i don't know!!

I think what made it worse with the gold one was how much of the 'repairs' had been covered with stonechip/ underseal so they really were invisable until I really started attacking!

So I finished up on the head gasket last night and the bastard thing won't start! So frustrating! When I drove it into the unit it kept cutting out and I knew it had bugger all fuel in it so it has to just be out of fuel. It turns over and gets a spark but there are no signs at all of ignition. It was too late last night to go out and get petrol so
I just had to leave it.

On the upside I took a couple of pics so you could see what the outside looks like...

Chucked some fuel in and the bastard thing still doesn't run.

Got fuel coming and a spark but nothing.

It's also got a hideous noise while turning over that seems to be from the cylinder nearest the bulkhead where the gasket had failed. Sounds like a broken valve contacting piston. Wierd as turning it over by hand it's fine!?! Triple checked timing and it is spot on and it's only making the noise on one piston.

Chances are I'll get an e30 2.5 lump and chuck that in unless anyone has any amazing ideas on why this one doesn't want to run?

A compression test should reveal any valve problems.

That would be the 1st thing to check. And is fuel being injected as well? Wet plugs? And you had a spark on the plugs right?

Could it have over-fueled? If the previous checks are ok, disconnect the two connectors that provide electricals to the injectors to provide more fuel from being injected, try some more starting. This helps excess fuel out without injecting new fluid. You can also remove the fuel pump relay instead.

It was definatly getting fuel as the plugs were moist, definatly getting spark, I rested a plug on the rocker cover to check.

Compression test would be next in line to check but rob (wizor) offered me a replacement engine at a price that I couldn't refuse so it's easier for me to swap it in

I was due to pick up a manual box from rob as well as I'd been planning on converting and the m20 he gave me was already set up with flywheel, clutch and spigot bearing so it made the most sense to drop the whole lot in as one unit.

I've already stripped 90% of the manual bits needed from the gold one just the metal line between clutch slave and master cylinders left.

Hopefully I will get some time to start stripping during the week.

Made a bit of progress yesterday but ended up spending 5 hours on a round trip to get some wheels for one of the guys I share the unit with.

Threw the compression tester on, only checked the cylinder I thought was at fault and sure enough it peaked at around 5 bar. Unsure of how the valve has failed until I strip it down (if i get a chance)

Stripped everything needed to lift the engine and box out as one as I'll take this opportunity to do the manual swap.
Left it last night with the crane lined up as I just didn't have faith in the strapping I had available and would really rather wait till I can get a chain on
