Personally, I say NAY. Not lecturing, but lights are not a fashion accessory... especially rear lights.
For safety, you need to communicate clearly with other drivers, and especially well with those behind you, as they can do lots of harm if confused or distracted... like most drivers these days.
You like to meddle with lights? Me, too! BUT - I like to make them brighter, bigger, more reliable. I also want to avoid the insurance adjuster telling me "go buy a new car, "they're much safer" after some meatball runs into my backside ...
my two centavos ... or zwei pfennig worth...

Update- I have snagged a few E21 rear lights for upgraded output and reliability. These are original BMW Parts, not modern "Startec" style with clear or smoked lenses, and I have two different versions with four and five lens sectors. I will be using the same principles I have been doing for years on E3, E10, E12, E24, E28, E30, E32, and other models... I am getting good at it.
I will be restoring the internals with shiny dishes, and adding filaments to double the lighted area of tail and brake lights, and of course they are plug-and-play, no rewiring needed, no cutting wires, no messing with the original wire harness at all. All done with emphasis on safety and my 'Auto-Hippo-Cratic' oath - Do No Harm. Sorry about mangling the real oath...
I will posts pictures when ready, and will be looking for a member to test them and see the difference (stock light one side, modified light the other side) for pictures of the visual improvement.
My first post will be the two versions of the lights, no lenses, so you can see the differences.
