All the parts are s14 specific

You will need to do the timming gear Ie guides chain tensioner oil pump etc that's about £1500 then you night as well replace the water pump £250 and a head gasket £250 whith
A damaged cam journal you will lucky to repair it it

You will need new piston rings and bearings so that's about £500 and a bottom end gasket set.

9/10 times with bearing damage like that you will find the crank journal is damaged

How much experience has your mechanic with these engines

I think for about £4000 you should have rebuilt with the engine management and running in the car

What you have just said ... is to be considered a sudden death to me ...

4000 what ???? OMG ... this is true failure to my heart :(

Ok the head gasket from VAG 69 USD ... this is just what i know for now.

OK, i will search in egypt for the rest of the parts ... i will try to do my homework regarding the comparison between engine parts and other engines .... i will let you know ..

My mechanic knows nothing abt this engines .... we are learning at the moment ... but to tell you something ... i don`t mind to learn in this engine ...

or at least i aim for a better future with this engine ... if only i`m capable to rebuild it ... :S

regarding the the crank journal .... if it is damaged, so i can turn clean the crank and buy a new +10, 20 crank bearings

$69 is just the head gasket you need the cam cover gasket cam carrier gasket, cam cover to spark plug gaskets etc it soon adds up and while m10 parts can fit the s14 all the s14 components are uprated

Get onto bmwfans web site at look at the price of parts

With the crank it depends on the damage if it can be repaired

Let me put it like this .. direkt but honest .. If you don't want to spend 4000 on an s14 engine like jason stated (and this is still an optimistic figure) .. just don't begin the rebuild ... an s14 engine runs fantastic if its nicely maintained or rebuild with the correct parts .. but this comes within this pricerange.

If you do the cheap rebuild and start using m10 parts then your engine won't live long.

I agree with Gerrit,

I have rebuild the M88/3 engine of my E28 M5 in 2009. This is a 6cyl version of your S14 engine, albeit with a larger bore and some other differences. The following figure shows the financial summary of the nett cost of the rebuild (just the engine without installation or the mandatory auxiliary parts)

Image

Please note that these prices are ex VAT and with the usual discount I get from BMW. Even when you recalculate for 4-cylinders (S14), you are still looking at 5k to 6k Euro as labour will not differ much. For more info on my rebuild, check out this thread

BTW: With the installation of the engine (that I did myself), I found myself 15k Euro ex VAT poorer. But this includes a new clutch, waterpump, heatshields, engine mounts, radiator, etc etc etc.

There is no such thing as a cheap S14/S38/M88 rebuild.

okay .... here are some updates.

The crank is really damaged ... journal number 4 is not in a good condition at all :(

also Con-rod number 4 is damaged ....

I am at the moment trying to search for another crank which seems to be impossible :S

okay, let me put it like this ...

I have an idea ... i don`t know if some one tried it before or not
If the S14 crank is interchangable with the M10 crank ... which increase the displacement a little.

Okay, what about the different direction ... CAN I USE THE M10 Crank & CON-ROD .... ???

If this is true, then which version should i use, M10B20 or M10B18 ....

M10B18 Bore * Strock (89 x 71)
M20B20 Bore * Strock (89 * 80)

S14B20 Bore * Strock (93.4 * 72.6

i think i can use the M10B20 crank & rods to enlarge the displacement 20 maybe 2300 CC

What do you think about this, and have ever someone tried this ??

No you need the right crank as the m10 has a smaller crank oil seal, and if you did use and m10 crank you need custom lenght con rods your engine is worth about £1250 in parts if you decied to sell it

A second hand crank is about £400-500 I have several spare rods and pistons etc.

Why not machine down the crankshaft and use undersize bearings. These are available for the S14.

Furthermore, I would forget about the idea of using an M10 crank; these will be overstressed at the high engine speed at which teh S14 operates. This will result in a breakdown eventually.

okay updated news ....

I heared something called (Plasma coating = metal spraying)
What happens is that you give the crank a spraying session to the damaged journal.
It comes back to the normal shape & size as if the crank is new .... then hardness metering task is being done to test the new made journal and compare it to other journals.

Then the crank goes to full machine down and then to use undersize bearings ... which i was not capable of doing because the crank journal was destroyed more than +40 .... however, when i do this metal spraying ... i would then be able to machine the crank and just use a oversize +10 in all crank bearings.

The crank bearing seems to be the M10 original one ...

I will keep studying and searching for other alternatives to the major problems i have ...

Anyway ... has anyone of you ever heard of the metal spraying ???

Updates ...

Yesterday i made the metal spraying as i said ... and the crank journal is now as good as a new one ... it regained the thickness above avarage so that when we do the re-cut for all the crank it becomes all the same measures.

The Pistons are the same as the S14B23 which are 93.4 mm and i bought the pistons rings (Original Mahle).

I am searching for the Rod & Main crank bearings ... (Could you advice where to buy) ???

I check the site BMWfans.info, however, i can`t find where to order ???

Also i have checked VAC for the gasket, and the bearings and i found all.

VAC has the performance coated bearings ... Has anyone used VAC bearings before ??

Where also i can find the Slide rail-twin chain ??

Thanks for the help in advance :)

I have personally check the M10 Rod Bearing in comparison to the S14 Rod Bearing ....

i have seen no difference but the bearing guide that is placed in 2mm right in the M10 Rod bearing than the S14 Rod bearing

would you please compare the below links

1- Rod bearing link for the S14
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/2 ... cting_rod/

2- Rod bearing link for the M10
http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/2 ... cting_rod/

they are both 48,00MM(0)

i see no difference in both but the bearing guide which holds the bearing in its position in the ROD

Do anyone of you know any other difference ????????????

my main crank bearing has the following written on it:

115.033.02
i tried to search for it on BMWfans and i found nothing !!!

what do you think about this ???
