S14 Rebuild process on E-21 .... Help plzz
Dear all,
I would just love to know any expertise of yours in swapping S14 engine into E-21.
What are the difficulties, problems .... what setup should be used .....
I have an S14 engine .. damaged one ... i can buy it ... and fix it ... it comes without ECU, Air flow & wiring...
would you please help.

I think I know a lot about S14's so I might be able to help you out if you encounter issues, but I have no experience in fitting the S14 engine in the E21 shell. However, it's likely to me that the engine might fot quite easily using an E21 facelift 4 cil subframe and M10 engine mounts, S14 engine mounts might require modifications to the subframe. You probably need to have a propshaft made to fit but I guess that's the least of your worries. Thing is that you do need the S14 gearbox with the bell housing and the sensors meaning you don't have the speedo drive. Is it going to be a road car?

after a very long reading regarding the S14, .... some people stated that this engine is a unique one .... but get damaged very fast .... 
I knew that the S14 can easily fit the E-21 engine bay using the same M10 engine mounts and the M10 4 cyln subframe .... the engine i found comes with the gearbox .... but i heared i can use the M10 gearbox ..... also i heared the rumors of using the 335 gearbox .... but the engine i found comes without ECU, Wiring & Airflow meter .... so is it possible to run it Mega ???

the other questions comes around the spare parts of the S14 engine, because as i said the engine i found is damaged and we don`t know what is really damaged inside .... could be piston, crank, con-rods ..... anything ..... so is any of those could be replaced with other parts from other BMW engine or any other engine .... the original specs of the S14 320Is is (93.4 x 72.6) ...
..... i don`t want to pay all the money i have in this engine
.... so what do you think ???

S14 engines are pretty much bomb proof, that's also why it's the most succesfull touringcar racing engine ever. But after some neglected maintenance a lean running condition can always occur and I guess that's the most common problem, but you can't blame the engine!
Of course it is possible to run the engine on a different engine management, depends on what you want, getting the missing parts might be a lot cheaper.
All useless thoughts for now, take that motor apart and see what's damaged. Might turn out to be an expensive job!

Hi s14 are expensive to fix budget 2.5 to 3k for a stock rebuild
The gearbox depends on the ecu if you use the s14 ecu you need the stock bellhousing/gearbox as this has holes for 3 three fly wheel sensors if you to a stand alone ecu you can use any m10/m30/s14/s38 gearbox with the matching flywheel and clutch
To use an aftermarkert ecu you will need to fabricate a new crank trigger

Yesterday i bought the engine ... i will open the engine apart next friday to see whats going wrong inside the engine (hope its not totally damaged).
the S14 gearbox was sold :S:S:S
so i will use my M10 Sport 5 speed gearbox which i already have ...
do anyone know a place of which i can buy a cheap spare parts for the S14
PS: the version i have is the italian version 320IS S14
so what do you think ??

Well I love my S14B20! But for parts, usually they're expensive, but you can get a good deal in Italy cuz there the 320iS is worth less (no not worthless haha)

happy new year my friends and merry christmas.
I recognized the problem, as follows:
we made a check at the button end, we discovered that the crank bearings for pistons No. 4 was totally damaged.
the bearing almost got twisted into the crank.
Piston no. 1 was not moving, we thought its melted or something, untill we discovered that the engine water made bad edges to the piston wall which made the pistons unable to move.
i put some brake oil to lubricate the area, untill i managed to move the pistons ... i got the pistons and the con-rods out ... and they are in very good condition.
the head is fine ... just one of the cam bearings is damaged .. everything else is fine...
The engine needs extreme cleaning ... really extreme ..
i need to change the cylinder head gasket ... cranck bearings & piston rings.
A question ... are the crank bearings the same as the M10 regular bearings ??????
i also need to change the chain holder ... :S ( i dont know the exact name) ... just like this photo below
