all very interesting stuff guys.
just to through some thing els into this very useful thread, a question if you please.....
does any one know the diff ratio on the standard 323i diff?? or a list of diff ratios for all models would be great, or a link also would be good.
the reason i ask is i have an diff off a 1982 auto 316, and yes i know the back axel on the 316 is quite different to the 323 but it would be interesting to know if the auto diff had a better ratio for acceleration. If this is the case i'm sure i could find away to fit it to the 323.
if no one knows the answer i'll just spin the diff in the morning and count the turns at each end

Did U ever try the tech section of
www.bmwe21.net ?
The 323i has a relatively long 3.45 diff, most 4 cil cars have a shorter 3.91. But I think this will be too short for a 323i, the 3.64 from the 320/6 would be more suitable.

Hiya Marco,
Compare the pics with mine and it looks exactly like the M20 overdrive 5 speed box... just check if it has the mechanical speedo drive connection... see slightly right and above the bmwe21.net text on the pic below

Hello Jeroen!
Thank you for your attention again!
I´m very happy whit the new upgrade on my E21 323i, more "smoth" to drive, after the 5-Speed OverDrive GearBox! Uau! It´s amazing ( and simple! )transformation! But BIG difference in the road! Much Better!
And MORE economic!
Yes. Second the pictures, it´s the same GearBox 5-OD 245
But i want confirm if this GearBox are RARE or not?
Because in the ETK, i see diferent 245 GearBox´s Over-Drive ( not 5-speed " Dog-leg´s" ) are diferent RATIO´s...
?
Best Regards and Thanks for all informations!
PS - My E21 323i it´s a "AIRPLANE"!

hello
i know this is going to sound dumb
but for the gear box to be sport does it need to be a dog leg?
this si because sum1 recently suggested that a car that i am breaking may have a sorts gearbox.as it has less travel to go into gear and is quite close ratio.
plz help
thank you in advance

probably have a short shift lever and thought its sport, you know if its sport cos the 1st gear is down where the 2nd gear should be, and the second gear is first e.t.c.

If you would have read the topic you would know that the numbers don't mean much in many cases. But how does your box compare to the photos on page 1?

Looks like a 5 speed overdrive box, not a sport dogleg, the reverse switch is at the top of the box, the reverse switch should be at the back ner the selecter end as far as i know!
