In June 2017 I worked on the doors. I hesitated to start working on them. The old doors weren't right. The one door had a type 2 window mechanism and the other a type 1, but both doors had type 2 glass. That's why one window wouldn't roll down all the way. Besides that the left door was rotten so I replaced that one.
Before painting I drilled the holes for the type 1 chrome mirrors. The doors were both totally cleared out. A few years ago Arnold gave me some type 1 window mechanisms, but I still did not know if I had enough parts to build me 2 complete doors, type 1.
Old parts on the floor
Then I spotted this bracket:
This bracket goes behind a round hole in the door. But ofcourse I just had one. So I picked up an old and rotten but complete type 1 door. That was a good example and good for some parts.
The donordoor
Bracket in the right place
The window pillar is mounted on the bracket. Typical type 1 specific.
But since my doors don't have the bracket, and since they are painted already......
I had one bracket, so I got the other one from the type 1 door.
Then it was time to sort the doorcatcher.
I could not get it to work, until I learned that is was broken

. That made sence..
The one is nice and bend round, the other one has a metal strip.

After that I took the pins out of the wheels. The were pretty worn. My guess is that this won't work all to well.
So I cleaned some.parts
Made new pins
And assembled
The locks needed work aswell. So I took them apart.
Rings on the outside are broken to.
These are the lockplates. Size 1 to 4. Per lock in a unique order. A lock contains more than 4 ofcourse.
Lock taken apart
All cleaned en put together with not worn plates.
And at last, I could start assembling the doors. Rubber glued to the door.
My freshly painted triangles mounted. These will show, because the type 1 mirror are on the door, not in the corner.
Seen from the inside, you see the locking mechanisma and window guide.
In the guide is the rubber that holds the window. Ofcourse, in my car that rubber is covered in paint.
Cleaned and put in to place and then I placed mechanism.
The mentioned bracket couldn't be welded anymore, since the door is already painted. But I had some original BMW nuts and bolts laying around.
Put the reïnforcement plate for the mirror in place.:
The last thing was the unlocking mechanism inside. I had tho lenghts of rod. I figured that the diffence was type 1 and 2. But it turned out that it is for the left and right door. The door handel.is in a different place, hence the difference in length.
