So finally an update...time time, if we only had more time

first: sorry, i didn't respond to the last post: the differential turned out to be a non slip dif....ah well, we'll have some fun anyway.

to mix all the talking with some pictures I will start with a 'nice' picture of our late donor E12...

Image

on with the topic:
To speed things up we decided not to change the rear axle and diff and go with the more expensive, but also more easy option: a 5 speed gearbox with analog speedometer (whats the correct name, i dont know) This way we also don't have to change the speedometer in the car.

We sold the 4 speed of our donor 528i E12 to a nice guy with love for Jaguars. Turns out that those are the guys who are buying all the 5 speed getrag gearboxes..
He told us he was going to use it to build in the analog speedometer drive of the 4 speed into a 5 speed with an electronic speedometer. Turns out that you can build it in. You guys probably know that already, but we didn't

So we got interested and bought a 5 speed from an early E28 (e24 is also possible) and went to the Jaguar guy who offered to help us.

after taking of the securing plate we had to remove the collar nut:
Image

this turned out to be quite hard, so we had to use the torch... hopefully we heat the flange too much, but the damn nut came off.
Image

than we had to remove the seal, so we could place the speedometer drive
the seal was still in good shape, but we replaced it with a new one later.
Image
Image

here on the left you see the ring that is on the output shaft of the 5 speed. on the right you see the gear from the 4 speed + ring to fill it up. ITS HELL TO GET IT OUT! luckily for us he had a spare one, so we didn't have to break down our 4 speed. We left our 4 speed for him to take apart.
Image

before we put the gear on the shaft, we tapped out the cap where the analog speedometer drive needs to sit, with a self made tool:
Image

tap tap and its out:
Image

Image

after cleaning we installed the gear on the shaft and speedometer drive next to it. here's a picture of an aftermarket version, because I didn't make a picture of the original...
Image

so now we have a 5 speed gearbox with speedometer! Nice extra is that we're keeping the car more original this way.

as you may now we killed our first M30B35 engine, this one was from a E34.
So we bought another one, this one came from a E24. good thing is that the cilinder head was taken off and the cilinder head gasket was replaced!

the bad thing though, or maybe not, i don't know: The engine is rebuilt, but hasn't run since.. so no oil through the engine. When we replaced the oilpan I saw some minor rust on the piston rods... is this a problem???

Another good thing: the engine mount holes match the ones on the E12! so we don't have to remake the engine mount on the right side!

E24 engine: mount holes are in the right place:
Image

E34: mount holes are more to the front:
Image

and a picture of the other mount because its nice and shiny
Image

to be sure we test fitted the engine and it fits! can't wait to finally put it in!
Image

Image

next: reassemble the intake + mount the rest of the cables, hoses, alternator, belts etc. Than fit the gearbox to the engine with the lighter flywheel and mount the beast in the car!
So, hopefully next post will be about showing you how easy and fast everything went

Great work. Any more pictures and details for source on the speedo drive parts? That would deserve a technical sticky.

Finally, the engine is in!

First we fitted some doors, just for the looks, Its been 3 months since we had the time to do something about the car, so we thought it would be a good idea to do some 'zichtwerk' first.
Image

we also fitted a whole new rear bumper, but I forgot to take a picture, will follow soon.

Then it was time for the engine.
We fitted te lighter flywheel of the 2.8
Image

and then it was time to put it in:
Image

we had some help so we got it in without a scratch!
Image
Image

We want to use the original gearbox crossmember of the E12, but it doesn't fit, we can make the holes bigger, no problem, or are we doing something wrong???
Image
Image

also the shifter doesnt fit perfectly in the hole, its 2 or 3 cm to much to the front. Is it fitted correctly and do we need to make changes, or are we doing something wrong? The engine is sitting on his rubbers perfectly.
Image

Next time we want to fix it, also I will start building up the doors. (i think)

Nice milestone, pity about the hiccups! So the shifter is too much towards the front while the gearbox support moved to the rear. The latter probably has to do with the longer gearbox, but for the shifter.. sounds like the wrong version! There are different lengths for different gearboxes.

No it can't be the engine supports (motorsteunen) Those are original from the m30b28 (original engine)

I heard from another forum that the crossmember is wrong and that we need to use 23711175314

Image

any ideas?

the shifter came with the gearbox, it is a lot shorter than the one with the 4 gears, but ofcourse thats because the 265 gearbox is longer.
But maybe there are more options.
