Car NOT being turned into track machine!

Post by ItalianM3 »

Thought I would start another thread as the other project is not happening! :(

The car will remain my everyday road car with I hope the occasional track day and if I am really lucky some Nurburgring action next year (2006)

First things I need to get done is the gear shifter parts. From other peoples storys I dont think that I really want any of this short shifter nonsense, it seems that the stock setup with all new parts would be fine as I have been driving it like it is for coming on two years and it feels like mashmallows now!

The next important things to do will be the bushes as these are all original and then the shocks and springs.

Starting with the Bushes, I have been reading on E30Zone, and most people seem to be concerned that when you are lowering your car say 35mm (H&R springs) you are upsetting your camber and your tyres will start lasting around 2000 miles. My concerns are if I go for the eibach and H&R combo will I have these problems if I keep the bushes standard or poly NON Eccentric?
My main goal is to create a good road car I am not to concerned about absolute ride quality.

So thats just a few qestions for starters.

My list so far is:

E46 M3 Cab rear top mounts £14.00 each
E30 M3 engine/gearbox mounts (originals still on the car)

Cheers Jeroen.

Merry Christmas

Hi Luke,

Nice to hear from you and good news indeed... looking forward to see you at the Ring next year!

As for the suspension upgrades:
I think you mean the Bilstein and H&R combo OR Bilstein and Eibach combo? In both cases the car is lowered 35mm compared to stock springs. As the 320iS's have M-Tech suspension as standard I believe they are already lowered abt 15mm so the car won't go much lower than another 20mm which is great.

Together with an old rallydriver we looked at my 320iS's suspension geometry and to us it looked like lowering with Eibach or H&R would put the car at the best position... how's that?!

The eccentric solid 88-on M3 control arm bushes might mess up camber/caster (but only slightly) and the improvement in stability, steering and braking makes well up for it... I'd definitely do that.

No prob to get the car new stock engine mounts but I'd definitely use E24 gearbox bushes. They only require enlarging the bearbox bracket holes from 6mm to 8mm, for the rest they are a perfect fit. Much more rigid, resulting in better gear changes and less stress on the driveline.

My 2 cents....

Thanks for the reply.

The E24 Gearbox mounts, are these standard 635 or M635CSI mounts?

Other stuff I have on the list is:

E46M3 Cab rear top mounts BMW

E30M3 engine mounts BMW

E30M3 front wishbone mounts eccentric (31129061222) BMW or Pro-Auto

Rear trailing arm bushes (33329061945) eccentric (33329058822) BMW or Poly?

Rear subframe mounts (33311129144) or should I maybe use Poly?

What do you think?

I think I will go for the Bilstein and H&R combo, these should be slightly harder than the Eibach springs yes?

The Bilstein shocks are 325 (Bilstein Sport) NOT (Bilstein Sprint/standard)

Also with the springs, someone told me to get the 6 cylinder ones! I tried looking for some H&R's on the web but their are som many different types!

Cheers Jeroen

Hey guys, I have taken delivery of my H&R cupkit suspension, H&R ARB's and Powerflex control arm bushes. It all looks very nice and good build quality also.
I will be replacing all the rest of the bushes with original items except for,

E36 M3 Cab rear top mounts
E24 Gearbox Mounts (635 Or M635)??

I will give you an update with pics in the new year hopefully.
