VED Exempt moves to 1974
In UK's budget the cutoff for VED exempt road vehicles will move in 2014 from the current 1972 to 1974, with a rumour that this will also herald a rolling 40 year-old exemption. Good news for 2002 owners then as well as E21s from 2016!.......... and also make Austin Allegro owners very happy too...........

I have had a smile on my face since the budget. Forget the saving of a mere 1p on a pint, I have a 2002 which was registered at the end of February 1973. I was thinking about selling it, not now !

I've never really for what all the fuss is about. I certainly don't see why some folk think their cars are worth bundles more for the sake of saving of less than 50p a week on road tax. You can probably find that much down the back of the sofa!

I dont think it has anything to do with the value of your car but more about the running cost Vs Miles per year covered ratio. The exemption only really attracts people who don't use their car so much but can have it taxed for 12 months for free, and then free to use their car whenever they like, so people who would normally SORN their cars over the winter, don't neccesarily need to do it. I don't use my 2002 that much, so if there was a show somewhere, I probably would'nt spend £130+ on RFL just to take it there, however if it was taxed 12 months round, I won't hesitate.
There was more classic motors on the road when the 25 year rule applied then what we have today, and that should tell us everything we need to know.

We have something similar here in Holland and our legislation is currently under review. It's a lot of work taking your car off the road and then back again, especially when you own a couple. And what for, can only drive one at a time. I'm glad the E21 is exempt here so at least I can use that one when I want to. Looks like cut off will be 30 years old here.

I agree with mobster here- it is surely about VED per mile actually travelled
if you use your classic car very sparingly you really begrudge any significant VED- money that could go towards the insurance costs
one of the reasons why I was looking for my Herman was that it was £11 Classic car VED here on IOM and pre 1982 being the cutoff for eligibility for various classic events (we also don't have SORN here- if VED lapses the car must go through the realy stringent Test all over again)
My Hartge being a 91 enjoys none of these benefits- VED is around £200, insurance about the same - and yet I have hardly used it these past 12 months

I've seen & met plenty of people who think their car's value is higher because it qualifies for free road tax.
Surely any 'saving' would be negated by insuring a car for road use but never using it? Plus (at the moment) you still need to MOT it. It's swings and roundabouts.

luckily we don't have the nuisance of MOTs here- but I accept that the MOT ritual is a bore in UK
and it is worth insuring your classic for the road even when in storage for long periods, over the winter for e.g, because of course you are avoiding the biggest expense of motoring (by having a classic car)-DEPRECIATION!
