Stupid car audio question

Post by petroscf »

Is there a limit of life for car speakers?
Especially because of their difficult life...

Unless you blow them up they will last ages, there are still 100 year old speakers around that still work. But as normal copper coils are used they will get oxidized, and the widely used paper cones will get softer and softer. This all results mainly in the output range (frequencies covered) becoming more and more narrow. But usually they will still work. So if you'd compare a 20 year old speaker with a new one, the new one will perform better in the lower and higher frequencies. Because of these issues there are some other consequences, in general they perform worse over time.

I am wondering whether I should replace my speakers and under seat ampli-sub : I have had them since 1995 when I had replaced the car's audio system...

Not likely. Used copper from that year will be OFC and the speaker cones will be either plastic or plastic coated. Unless the unit has seen a lot of water or oxidation, it'll be fine I expect. Unless you are seeing (ehm hearing) performance issues.

Well, I sometimes think that I get the idea that it might have become a bit worse than before..But it might be my idea, especially comparing with rich highs and lows in newer cars.

Speakers are Kicker oval 2 way 6x4 (60W if I remember well) in factory lots, and because of no bass, I fitted also a Roadstar ampli-sub (80w) under the passenger's seat.
Source then was the Sony xrc700rds
Current source is an Alpine CDE-103BT.
