320iS European tour (56K warning)

Post by Jeroen »

Well maybe that's slightly exaggerated but here's my plan:

Haven't driven the 320iS much lately but up to two years ago I used to take 'her' down south for some great mountain roads.

So, June 1st I will jump in the car and driver her from Holland, down south through Germany using motorways (might stop at the Ring though  ) and then get off the motorway and take the great country roads through Austria to get to the north of Italy.

Will be in the Bolzano region at first and I'm still contemplating whether to go to the east coast in the direction of Venetia or drive a little further down south and be in Toscana. Whatever, I'll be spending about a week there, relaxing and perhaps meeting some Italian 320iS owners?

Here's a few ones from earlier trips...

I couldn't agree more!!
Last august I bought a E36 M3 Sedan in the Bolzano area, a town called Merano. We stayed there for a couple of days and the roads never seemed to bore us. Don't forget to go to the Paso di Stelvio, which was also selected by Top Gear as the best driving road on the world :o
Here are a few pics:

Have fun out there!! 8)

Hi Jeroen, it's a pity I moved to London... I wanted to show you my 4 door one, that unfortunately is still in Verona!!!
Here in UK seems that there are not garages (at least they are not so frequent like in Italy, hence they are pretty expensive, and leave alone in the city where I live)

I miss her so-o much!!! I also got some bits from eBay.uk for her in the meanwhile, can't wait to upgrade her (black headlining, sport rear bench with headrests and armrest for £ 5, OBC 2 kit, a ton of windows switches...)

Then, did you fit the sky sack?

Ciao Luca

Well, sipping some Sambucca it's time to write a little report and post some pics... here we are!

The Mrs and I set off on June 1st and as we just happened to pass by the Ring  we stopped to chat with Steve (this time testing an Alfa, see below).
Image

Over to a place slightly south of the cars' home town Munich to spend the night, ready to hop over the Austrian border to enjoy the mountains in the morning! So Alps it was the next day and as the Passo del Rombo wasn't open yet we decided to take the Grossglockner which was quite busy but what a great view!

Down south in the direction of Venice and not Venice Beach this time  even though we found a nice hotel right at the beach.
When in Rome ehr Venice time for some sightseeing as well...

Image

After that we took a whole bunch of narrow roads and small mountain passes to get to Lake Garda...

Image

Now after that it was time for the serious work :D Used a bunch of passes like the Passo di Tonale to get to the real thing. First the Passo di Gavia which I had 'conquered' last a few years ago when it was closed 8) . Found out they finally replaced the 50 years old asphalt at the southern half which takes away a bit of the charm of the pass but ok, makes it easier to drive even though the south side still is very, very narrow (a bike might have a lot of trouble passing a car, or the other way around).

After going up and down the Gavia I was wondering why the hell I didn't drive the Passo di Stelvio before but it must have had something to do with driving over a closed and icey Gavia before so as it had already gotten dark I gave it a pass, but this time Stelvio was mine!

We were in good company, too. A bunch of brits doing an Alps detour before heading for the Le Mans 24 hours...

So, after my first time here I can only agree with Jeremy Clarkson, this must be the most beautiful road in the world!

As there are always special encounters, yes we had a nice one this time as well as a E60 M5 with a familiar antenna drew my attention at the foot of the Stelvio. It was a BMW test driver that told us that he was testing an upgraded brake setup on the M5. A lot of talk about their ways of testing and why this pass was his favourite. Mind you, to avoid traffic they test drive at night... have to try that myself one day but the thought is somewhat scary!

After having done a 3000+ kms in little over one week I can only kiss my car to thank it for being a great ride again. The car behaved perfectly and out there the car is so much more fun to drive than on the roads here with a police officer with a lasergun on every corner of the street. Nothing went wrong and even after revving her as much as possible at all times there was no excess fuel consumption and no noticeable oil consumption. And wowww after a trip the engine is burnt clean and she revs so easily... did a 100-200 kph with a 996 and it went aside quite hastily... lucky me as above 220 kph most of the grunt is gone haha

Anyway, these were my notes in a nutshell. Signing off in an appropriate way now ;) ...

verrrrry nice!!

As for myself, I am going to south of France in 2 weeks!

And might go to the "Îles Porquerelles" too :)

Seeing a bit of mountains won't hurt, there are too much speed bumps here but they dont replace the, ;)

Hi Luca... we haven't been in touch lately, hope all is well! Next time we'll make sure to meet in Italy!

The Skisack is still waiting... I still haven't found a decent rear seat with armrest!

Well the E21 is still waiting for a restore but on demanding roads like these (but also the most fun roads ever) an E30 does a great job.

Better not envy my tyre bills as now, after abt 15.000 kms, all 4 tyres are up for replacement! Not too bad actually now I think about that figure, most times 10K is already something to dream of!

Time for a set of R1R's and some Eibach ARB's!

Mate, if I had know you would only have been at the Ring so briefly I would have taken you out immediately! After telling you to come by for over a year you can't just stay for half an hour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your photo's look seriously good, I'll be heading for Sardinia later today, so will keep you posted how the passes look tomorrow.

LOL ... well there IS a nudist colony there.. will see what my friend from Switzerland thinks hahaha

And ... I made a spelling fault, its "Îles Porquerolles".. pork... roll... sounds even nastier... and the Château du Marquis de Sade is also in the neighbourhood of her house hah hah... I don't think the fun will be missed on this trip

Will sure enjoy that trip as my psyché needs it soooo bad!

Hello Jeroen,

Your pictures bring back some lovely memories. Especially the Gavia is a little gem that should be preserved as a historical road.
