the tanks are always a Problem. I hope my tanks are as good as your new ones

I had the same Problem with my e30 - only the edges were rotten!

I owed 'some pics, so here they are!

Image

some scrapmetal fit to sie (roughly).

Image

welded and grinded

Image

Image

And some rustprevention, for the time being, until they go to th powdercoater.

Image

I also dug up my fuel pipe cover. It's totally shot, hinge is worn out and it all rust.

Image

At this spot the cover hit the rubber on the car. Clearly to see that it moved over the years, due to that wornout hinge.

Image

There is also some damage to the edge of the cover. So I scraped the paint of. Ofcourse, rust and filler... :hammer

Image

Bu not to worry, I got me an brand new used resada one. Thanks Jan :thumbsup !

I took the coilovers apart and found out some things.

At the rear I have 18 old Eibachsprings

Image

And Bilstein B8 (sport?) shocks

Image

Image

At the front I have honky tonky wappie wappie springs

Image

And probably B8 shocks, but Bilstein NL couldn’t help me with this number to determine the type.…

Image

Old springs:

Image

Brand new set of Eibach springs!!

Image

Because I had to use an airgun to release the spings, and I don’t hav one and my comprassor is not far from beeing dead, Arnold D. came to the rescue! Thanks Friend!
But I don’t want to borrow stuff, so I got me a brand new second hand compressor, 100 liter tank, capacity 425l/m.

Image

And a new airgun, Rodcraft, heavy duty, named The Beast. goes max 1295 Nm …

Image

Image

Both of these things are donated by my housebank... Thanks Dad and mum!

After beeing done with the sealant, it’s time to put the asphaltic panes with adhesive backing, the damping mats. I bought 7 pieces of 1m2 a piece, 4 mm thick. On the welding I wanted every thing like they did in the factory. But wit they saounddaming material, I intent to use a lot more. Gives a much more silent car with a much sturdier feel to it.

I started with cutting out the side panels

Image

Image

And stick away! I use a paintstripper to heaten the bodypanel, put in the mat and use the paintstripper to heat the mat aswel. Dus push and pull it in to place, and make sure it sticks on the panel everywhere.

Image

In the boot these two will go. BMW used to put in only one above the exhaust, but on the 323i they didn’t use 2. But I do.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Done the shelf

Image

Backseat

Image

On the seat it selve I can almost fit a complete mat.

Image

Image

Done the rest.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I think the car is somewhat 40 kilo’s heavier, sice I used 5 (!!) complete mats, so I used 5 m2! Only leftover material is this.

You deserve to have it said over and over again, Koos: what a perfect job you're performing! Should there be any 70s BMW engineers reading along in this topic I am sure they must be thinking they did only half the job back then and you are doing more than the other half right now. Resulting in the perfect e21 323i. My deep respect!

Greetz,
Walter.
