At the shop where we worked on our car they use Spies Hecker.pandemonium001 wrote:Top work there. Colour looks great, I can never get enough time in one go to go wet on wet in the garage, always end up spending ages panel wiping and setting up the following weekend.
Which products do you use? Upol? how much do you thin the high build primer by? 20%
They have a license to use solvent based paint (instead of water).
For the wet on wet painting we used special filler which is thinner by itself.
We used special wet on wet filler of MaxMeyer.
With Spies Hecker filler it is also possible to thin it, but with cheaper filler this doesn't work, because the idea is to get a more smooth surface and filler is to rough, even if you thin it.
Here some more picks of us working on the car before the paint job.
When I worked on my E30 and wanted to upgrade stuff, I was used to the fact that everything was prepared. If you want to built an upgrade to an E12 you need to start drilling holes...
For instance the hole for the central locking.
In the A style and B style i drilled 18mm holes. (still need to do it in the already painted doors....)

make sure not to drill too low (flat surface just at the bottom of the hole)

Nice trick we learned at the paint shop: Use a wire to pull back the rubber of the window so you can paint under it:

If you need picturs from the central locking wires etc. My E12 is factory equipped with central locking. THose hole's are also needed if you gonna put in power windows.

We have a type 2 528 E12 with central locking and power windows in the front. This car is beyond saving, so I use it as an example for our project.
I'm not going to make the long hole in the a-style (whats the correct english term?) I drilled a 18mm hole, same as the b-style. So i need to make the wires custom.
But saying that, I think that the type 1 E12 has a round hole in the front as well, am i correct?
What I need to squeeze through the hole: power windows, power mirrors (left and right) and central locking, hopefully it will fit. The connectors will not fit for sure, so I need to re-fit the connectors...

Thanks for the tip on the filler.
In the UK as far as I am aware if the car was OEM solvent base i.e classic or historic that is allowed, as well as commercial vehicles and building paints.
Solvent does give the DIYer a fighting chance, dries without air movement, so less dust. but i still usually fall outside the 24hr coat window and need to skuff and recoat the following weekend.
top work and keep the pics flowing.

It will be tight fit but must not be a problem I guess. Today I sorted out my power window wiring harness and it seems it wil fit with the other cables. But I am not that far to fit it.

when you are ready to fit the cables, let me know, pictures always help. When I get to it, I will post it as well.
Still more disassembling to do.... front and back suspension need to come off, plus tank and fuel line. Then painting the bottom and then, finally we can start building.
Tomorrow we will put the plastic cover that is now over the car, under the car so we can spray all the inside parts (holle ruimtes, hoe noem je dat?) with sticky protective stuff (sorry, forgot the name, I will make a picture of the process)

thanks buurman!
not a very interesting post, but a very important step: Dinitrol ML time!

put the plastic that was on top of the car on the ground because of all the leaking

That Dinitrol can looks handy, i used a large can of waxoyl and a shultz gun with a 1.5m nylon tube extension & 360 nozzle on the end, pressure at 90psi and 10% white spirit did the trick.

Re: Rob and Joost E12 528 type 1 ----> 535i
We bought an e12 528i but the car was totally rusty and beyond saving. But that was just the car we needed.
It was a swiss import with electric windows and a central locking system.
Today we took off the rear axle to see what kind of Diff was under the car
And i think we were lucky because it is a LSD but we don't know for sure.
Can some one tell me more about the diff of a 528I we can't see it because it is to rusty.

LSD or not is simpel...
Turn the outer axles, if they turn both the same way: Lsd.
If not: open.

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Just open it up. Than you can see. If it is this rotten you"ll need to change the oil at least
