Uwbuurman: 1978 323i polaris: almost done

To go on, I read into the ignition part of the engine. That goes into the flat bit on the side of the engine. According to the manual, a little needle bearing goes into the hole.



But is it not there.



But before must have been there, so I ordered a new one, asap. A friend of mine told me a similar bearing goes into the cranckshaft. But this cranck comes of an automatic 525e and those dont gave a bearing. So I ordered that aswell.



Cleaned the fuel distributor, all banjobolts re-zincked.



Rest of the airbox parts cleaned up.



And assembled.



At that moment, I saw that the airfilter box ia missen two clamps. It needs 3, but ofcourse, mine has just 1. Well, good luck hunting those down. BMW doesn't sell those per piece.





The clamps for a 316 and 320/6 pancake fitherhouse dont fit. But those from a 318i are identical. And wouldn't you know, bmw has decided to sell those a piece... so I ordered 2 of those.

In May 2018 I have sone lots. All litte chores that had to be done, but are in the way of the next big steps. Nefore the engine can go in to the car lots of small projects need to be done.

So I made a list to be able to sign off every chore. But for some things I was depending on suppliers like powdercoater or zinccoater.

But I started with collecting my refurbished Alpina's.







The turned put very cool. I need to paint the centers black myselve, but first I had the rubbers put on. I choose the Vredestein Sportrac 5.

The clamps for the airfilterbox were in. So thats done aswell.



The base of the WUR needed some attention. In the previous setup it was a mess, bolted on with just one bolt and not in contact with the oil.

So I found a fitting O ring and a treath length.

The parts for the shifter are done. Arnold made a few bushings in brass so there is less play in the linkage.







Sprayed the stick.

Injectors cleaned and tested. I used new BMW rubbers instead of the old O rings.









And placed in the intake manifold.



The fuellines are also replaced. To bad that they are of the last batches from all over the place. Different warehouses hence differenten tints of white... But it is a whole lot better than the old set.

And I put the subframe under the engine. Fitted the e30 enginecages around the enginesupports.



Sparkplugs and new cableset installed.





And some fresh bolts, nuts and screws layed out.

There is quite some difference in the bolts for the mounting of the gearbox and driveshaftsupport. I will sort that out later and get the right ones.





The hoses on the extra airslide changed for new.



And installed.
